A Century of Women’s Activism and Voice in Newcastle
2018 celebrates the centenary of The Representation of the People Act which began the process of women’s suffrage and we are marking the occasion with a month of activities (6 Feb to 8 Mar) which celebrate women’s political voice and activism, honour women who are making a difference in the City and connect with the theme of International Women’s Day 2018,#PressForProgress. There will be further activities happening throughout the year organised by both the Women’s 100 Group and a range of partner organisations who are supporting and/or sponsoring activities.
One of the events we are organising is a pop-up choir which will perform on the commemoration day itself, 6 February (probably 12.30 – 1pm) in the City Centre, and we are now inviting women to get involved. We will meet and rehearse between 10am and 12 midday on the morning of the event and will then walk to the place we will start the performance, which will likely be Grey’s Monument in Newcastle City Centre. We will then begin a musical procession becoming a walking choir and will sing as we walk down to Central Station. We shall circulate music learning resources (lyrics and recordings) two weeks before the performance so you can do a bit of singing homework in preparation for our performance.
If you enjoy singing, tunefully or otherwise (all abilities and learning styles are welcome!) and would like to be involved in a brilliant event where women make a lot of noise as part of our celebration and commemoration of the centenary, please contact Bethany (email@example.com).
