Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland are holding a discussion with speaker & researcher Hannah Bows on Crime and safety at UK music festivals. Bows will present the emerging findings from an ongoing study examining crime and safety at UK music festivals. Drawing on a survey of 487 festival attendees in 2017-18, this paper challenges the dominant cultural constructions of festival sites, which the results suggest are actually generally safer than comparable public spaces. However, the findings reveal feelings of safety and experiences of crime are gendered, with women reporting feeling less safe than men and experiencing higher rates of sexual harassment and sexual violence than men. Implications for future research, policy and practice are considered.
