Date and time:
John Drew is Chair of Medway Safeguarding Children Board and a past Chief Executive of the Youth Justice Board. In 2015/6 he conducted an Independent Review of South Yorkshire Police’s handling of child sexual exploitation in the light of the Rotherham scandal.
In a wide ranging talk John will reflect on his experiences in South Yorkshire and elsewhere, examining a range of issues including the difficulties of applying a social work model of child protection to child sexual exploitation and other oppressions faced by older children, as well as examining attitudes to the institutional abuse of children, especially those in custody. In particular John will attempt to answer the question ‘Will the Children and Social Work Act usher in a new era of safeguarding or will it be come to be seen as a short-lived regressive step?’.
All are welcome, though booking is required.
